I’ve been reading more romance novels lately than I am comfortable admitting. Except on the internet because you know it’s so private here.
I’ve never been a romance novel reader, I’m not sure why or why not. I don’t think it matters.
One of the reasons I like reading them now is, that they are romance novels. I mean we know who gets it in the end ..ahem. The main character doesn’t die suddenly or become a giant spider or lose major limbs. They, as a genre, gloss over war (many of them are set during the napoleon wars and like Jane Austen’s novels are full of soldiers in regimentals who just seem to be hanging around so that there are enough men to dance at the balls given every week) which is fine with me, if I want to read about war there are plenty of that genre available as well. But I don’t.
Also I don’t want to read the Thornbirds no matter how classic it is, because I made it halfway through that book in my second pregnancy and my husband tore it from my sobbing person and hid it because really how many terrible thing have to happen to you in a fictional story? I get it, her life stunk…no one else needs to die! But I digress…
I also don’t want to read about creepy crawlies or things that leave me frightened to get out of bed at night even if I do need to run and slam that book into the freezer so that it isn’t looking at me while I sleep.
I’m tired. My attention span is sometimes five minutes and some times five seconds and when I get a quiet moment, it is usually late, and did I mention I’m tired. Also I think I may need glasses, my 33rd birthday (wait, is it 33rd?..yes..33rd…my memory is fine!) is around the corner and apparently my eyes have decided they need a cane or two. Note to self: eat more carrots.
I could just as easily say I like mysteries, which I do. I love Janet Evanovich who is also a romance writer, go figure.
Many romance novels are series and I am a sucker for series. Currently I’m reading Mary Balough’s Web series and her Simply series as well as Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton family series (i don’t really know the name of that series apparently) Sadly I think is has to do with laziness. If I can get involved in a series I don’t have to work too hard to remember who the characters are because they were in the last book. No extra work wondering if I’ll like the book I’m already invested in the characters.
Kinda like blogs. I’m invested in blogs because I know the ‘characters’ however it is harder to fall asleep with the monitor on my lap then a book. I’m sure that will change soon when they invent floating, self timer, reading light on the side would you like fries with that monitors.
What are you reading?

Right now I’m working on a romance novel.. but the going is slow because WHEN do I have the time to read?? I’d sure like to know.
But I did want to suggest you give Nora Roberts a go. She has written like a bazillion books and is pretty much one of the only authors I read anymore. She does lots of series and even has a romance/mystery/crime series that she writes under the name “J D Robb”. Those books are freaking awesome.
I love to read series too.
I’m not sure, but I think I have 8 different series…
And series are very populare here in Norway!
you’re like joey from Friends putting your scary books in the freezer (he did that with the shining). haha.
right now, i’m stuck on the beverly lewis amish romance/fiction books. sounds kind of funny, but living just a couple hours from lancaster’s amish country, i’ve always been curious to see what really goes on there. i’m on my third series by her…waiting for the library to call with the remainder of the books i need so i can finish!
Reading…. well… not much these days. I was really into the Bill Clinton book about giving and then well, I just don’t have the attention span of more than a magazine article or blog these days. Even getting the chance to read those on a regular basis are sporatic. Sigh…
You should join our book club. You can vote for the May book now. I am reading In the Woods.
I just finished reading Kite Runners. Sorry I can’t remember who wrote it-that is bad. But the book was great. Hard to read in parts (difficult life stuff) but hard to put down too.
Just catching up on my reading your blog and reading janet evanovich’s “13″
I was laughing out loud at the “steady stream” post and the “but we es just kids!” comment =)
I love Evanovich too! And the Quinn series! Try the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer, it’s based towards teens (like Harry Potter) but is really a good read with good characters. Plus it’s based in the Northwest!
I’m between books right now, studying my coursework to get my teaching certification is what I’m doing (not very exciting reading).
